Scranton, Pennsylvania, has a rich history rooted in the anthracite coal industry and the subsequent industrial boom of the late 19th century. Originally settled in the 18th century, it became a major center for coal mining, iron production, and railroads, earning the nickname "Anthracite Capital of the World". Later, Scranton also became known for its textile industry, particularly Nottingham lace production. The city became known as Scranton in 1851, in honor of the Scranton family who established the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company. Scranton played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution. The Scranton family's focus on coal mining and transportation led to the development of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, which controlled a vast network of coal mines. In the 1880s, Scranton gained the nickname "The Electric City" for being the first city in the United States to have a fully operational electric streetcar system, showcasing its early adoption of electric power.
After the turn of the century, Scranton's economy declined as oil replaced coal as the primary energy source. The coal mines eventually ceased operations by the 1950s. The city has since focused on diversifying its economy and revitalizing its downtown area.
