Enclosed by Woodward Avenue, State Fair Avenue, Eight Mile Road and Fayette Street, this neighborhood gives easy access to the newly opened Gateway Shopping Center. A new development is in the works on the site of the former Michigan State Fairgrounds.
Today, the city's 142-acre portion of the old fairgrounds is no longer a dead zone and is bustling with activity: new e-commerce logistics buildings, a busy transit center for DDOT and SMART buses, and nearly 3,000 newly created jobs.
Amazon opened a five-floor, 3.8-million-square-foot Fulfillment Center on the south end of the property that, according to the city, now employs about 2,600 people.
Target opened a 180,000-square-foot Sortation Center warehouse on the property's west side that the company says employs 150.
A third warehouse building has been built near 8 Mile, which although not yet full, soon could house an auto supplier.
And at the center of it all is a giant new transportation hub for buses. It replaces several small outdoor bus shelters and portable toilets once situated along Woodward. This new 52,000-square-foot Jason Hargrove Transit Center opened in the spring and may look familiar, as it was built within the original structure of the old state fair Dairy Cattle Barn, built in 1924. In contrast to the old bus shelters, the center has restrooms, a heated lobby, Wi-Fi and power outlets for charging phones. It also illuminates at night with neon green lights.
The old fairgrounds featured a collection of century-old buildings, three of them on the National Register of Historic Places. The city ultimately demolished several buildings in the redevelopment, including the Coliseum and Agricultural Building. However, the Coliseum's unique white facade, known as a portico, was saved and now anchors a new public plaza at the site — Coliseum Park.
